Hello everyone.  I am Karen Taylor, Dave Taylor’s wife.  As most of you already know, Dave passed away suddenly from a heart attack on Oct 27, 2009.  As Dave requested, our family held a private memorial service the following Sunday.  It was a beautiful service where we listened to some of Dave’s favorite classical music pieces and shared stories and memories of our years together.
While our time together was way too short, I feel truly blessed to have spent 19 wonderful years with Dave.  We shared a life full of laughter, joy and love. Dave and I enjoyed spending time with family, exploring National Parks, playing golf and other hobbies such as movies, music and classic cars.

Dave’s passion was his work.  He loved research and thrived on learning and the sharing of information which led to his idea and vision for the PCI Knowledge Base.  The emails I have received from Dave’s colleagues have warmed my heart as they would have Dave’s.  I can tell you that Dave never realized how he touched the lives of so many people.

For those of you who did not know Dave well, I have included his professional bio below.  All registered users of the Knowledge Base can add comments/postings/memories as a lasting tribute to Dave.  Thank you all for your support during this very difficult and tragic time.

With regards to the PCI Knowledge Base, we feel it will continue in honor of Dave, but some details still have to be worked out...please be patient with us during this time.

BIO
Dr. David Taylor, CISSP

Dave Taylor founded PCI Knowledge Base in January 2008. The PCI Knowledge Base is a “Research Community” for merchants, banks, service providers, assessors, consultants and technology providers to share information about their experiences and best practices.  There are 3000 registered members of the PCI Knowledge Base.

The PCI Knowledge Base research focuses on payment, security and compliance issues of interest to merchants and financial institutions of all types.  Industry partnerships with the National Retail Federation, the National Restaurant Association and the Merchant Risk Council help ensure the currency and relevance of the PCI Knowledge Base Research.

Dave was a PCI consultant for 4 years, providing business and technical consulting to leading retailers and financial institutions. He founded the PCI Alliance in 2006, and was the VP of Data Security Strategies for Protegrity, a data security company.

Before joining Protegrity, Dave co-founded and was Chief Research Officer of The Info Pro, a research firm in New York City.

Dave spent 14 years as an analyst and executive at Gartner.  He managed Gartner’s Applications Research Group and created the Electronic Commerce Strategies research service in 1988.

Prior to Gartner, Dave was a group product manager and software development manager at AT&T and Bell Labs.   Throughout his career, Dave gave more than 500 presentations in over 30 countries.

Dave held a CISSP credential and had a Ph.D. in organizational psychology from Purdue University and an MBA from NY University.  Dave co-authored the book Doing E-Business, published by John Wiley & Sons in December 2000.

I had the great pleasure of working closely on a large corporate PCI compliance project with David. He and his colleagues taught me first hand the ropes of PCI DSS and have kept in touch for various seminars and the occasional questionaire. I will forever be greatful of what I've learned about data security, and I will forever cherish the Bluegrass Tribute to Dave Matthews CD he gave to me. He was a fun person to work with and just chat with. Thanks for everything Dr. Dave!

Hi Friends and Family of Dr. David Taylor,

I hope this is okay for me to post here as I never had the pleasure of getting to know or work with Dr. Taylor. However, his dedicated work and insightful maintenance of the Knowledge Base has been such a tremendous help for me and my company. Dr. Taylor's webinars were professional, loaded with helpful material and made to be understandable for even the security novice like myself. While his work will remain close in my mind and in our company's success, his memories will be I am sure cherished for a long long time by those friends and family members who knew him best.

Dr. David Taylor will be remembered by many and his work will long remain respected and relevant in a number of fields,

Vijay

Since David's passing, we received countless emails in honor of him...we thought that these kind words would serve the PCI Knowledge Base community well...

I have worked closely with David over the past year, and I am so saddened. I will miss picking his brain about anything PCI, and while I have him, listening to him crack a few jokes, like only he can. David has left behind a legacy in our industry like few have, and we all continue to benefit from the hard work he put into creating the PCI Knowledgebase for years to come. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with David, and will greatly miss him.

David was an absolutely wonderful person to work with. His knowledge, personality and energy were infectious.

I am very saddened to hear the tragic news of Dave Taylor's passing. I have always had the highest respect for David and counted him on my list of business and personal friends.

We are all sad to hear about the unexpected loss of Dave. He was a great guy - always reaching out to help whenever he could.

I wanted to state my condolences to David's family. The loss is theirs, first and foremost, and from my interactions with him I know that it must be a big one.

We have certainly lost not only a friend but a great security mind.

I will miss his spirit and enthusiasm.

My sincerest condolences to Dave's family. This is a HUGE loss for the payment security community!

I met David at a seminar over a year ago and spoke with him at length on several occasions since. He was certainly passionate about the Knowledgebase and more than willing to help anyone at anytime with their PCI issues. He was a dynamo! (I wish I had that kind of energy!). He'll be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

I have never met David but have talked to him several times. He was truly a remarkable person, and very generous with his time.

For those who never met Dave, I can tell you that in the two times I met him, he struck me as a person whose wisdom was only excelled by his kindness. I will miss him.

He was a great man and a great advocate for the PCI community. I will miss him greatly.

David’s personal and professional drive in support of the PCI Industry will truly be missed. David built a forum that all of us have participated and I look forward to everyone’s continue support for this forum.

Dave is going to be greatly missed as a colleague and a friend.

As a supporter of the PCI Knowledgebase, I am saddened. As person who have traveled with Dave and looked to him as a mentor, I am devastated.

David Taylor made a difference in my PCI knowledge. His committment to his profession and his professionalism is what I will remember.

Dave was always a pleasure to work with and happy to share his observations and findings. He will be missed in the PCI community.

I will recall David as a man who had a vision about how he could inform and educate people worldwide on the subject of PCI. He turned that vision into a reality through the establishment of the PCI Knowledgebase website that is recognized as a leading source of information on the subject of PCI. I will recall David as being a voracious sponge. I remember numerous, and lengthy, telephone conversations that we had, during which David would listen intently and then expose his depth of thought on the subject matter that he cared so much about. He was engaged then. He continues to be engaged, and the vision that he had for PCI knowledge transfer will continue through our collective efforts and the global community of interest at pciknowledgebase.com. Because of the virtual nature of the world in which we operate, I never had the privilege of meeting David personally, and now, I regret that even more having learned of his untimely demise. My thoughts are with his wife and family at this very difficult time.

My thoughts and prayers go out to David’s family and loved one’s, who will miss him in a profound way, well beyond the professional connection we all had with David. Bringing this valuable forum into existence, provided a shining example of how David’s energy, passion and vision applied in a focused way, came to accomplish a great thing!

Dave was a pleasure to work with and a real great person. This is a large loss not only for his family but also for the PCI community.

He was an icon in the industry and will be sorely missed.

He was an important mentor, collaborator, and colleague to me. I wish that I had seen more of him these past years. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I always enjoyed Dave's intellect, sense of purpose and, above all, good humor, as will undoubtedly many others who knew him.

I’m shocked and deeply saddened. I was just beginning to build a relationship with David over the past few months, but I had already established in our few conversations together that he was one of the most pleasant and optimistic persons I’ve dealt with in business.

I only had a chance to talk with Dave over the phone. He spend about 90 minutes with me and made me feel comfortable and part of this group. We didn't just talk about audit and PCI we talked about family so I know his family will miss him.

As my company was initially trying to overcome the hurdles of PCI about 2 years ago, David gladly helped me with some tough questions when I contacted him after reading one of his articles. I had just spoken with him again back in September, so this was a shock when I read that he had passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his family at this difficult time.

I met Dave about 3 years ago or so and was quite fond of Dave from the get-go due to his sense of humor. He also possessed an incredible wealth of knowledge on PCI and the security industry in general. We ended up speaking at several events and webinars together. Even though I thought I would be intimidated by working with someone as established as Dave was, he always made me feel at ease and provided me with introductions to others in the industry while giving me tips to succeed at the same time.
I considered him a mentor and give him credit for helping me advance in my career.
He will be sorely missed.

Hello. I am a family member and I hope it's okay that I am posting here. My name is Mitch and I am Karen Taylor's brother.

My career is far removed from computers and internet security. I confess that on many occasions I asked Dave just exactly what he did, and to my surprise, after a fairly lengthy explanation..I was still confused. I'm only sorry that I'm just beginning to learn how intelligent Dave was. That is just a tribute to how equally humble he was.

Needless to say, my family and I miss him terribly. Dave...I swear I'm going to kill you when I see you for leaving us like this!

Please...I encourage everyone to post here! It is truly heart warming to read the postings and see how many people he touched. He wanted to make an impact on the world and in his field...and I now see him as a brilliant pioneer who has made great advances. Dave...you did indeed make an impact!

I am at a loss for words to the people that knew Dave so much better than I did, except to say how very sorry I am to hear this very sad news. I met Dave at Sterling Farms one Saturday afternoon in the summer of 2005, I was new to town and knew no one. Every SAT. and SUN. for the next three months Dave and Karen asked me to join them and I did. We had allot fun playing golf and I enjoyed every minute of it. I couldn’t help but notice Dave’s profound modesty, kindness and patience. After three months the contract I was working ended and I moved back home to Texas. Dave and I talked a few times after that traded emails and always sent Christmas cards. I always looked forward to hearing from Dave and Karen. It is said that a light that shines twice as bright burns half as long and I know Dave’s light was oh so very bright. Dave buddy I will miss you as I know many others will.

Karen, The Christmas cards will continue and please remember;
Many are the afflictions of the righteous;
But the LORD will deliver us from them all.

What a sad and unexpected thing. Just terrible. Dave was so kind, full of wisdom and enthusiasm. My dear friend Dave and I travelled together to many customers and partners when we worked together at Protegrity for several years.

My main contact with Dave was a PCI interview we had early in the year. I was impressed with his knowledge, firm grasp of reality, drive to make things better and his sense of humour. We had a great conversation and both of us learned a lot. At the end of our call he asked me to become a member of the PCI panel of experts. I hadn't made that move yet, but now I will.

We will miss him. My thoughts are with his family.

I first met Dave when he called to interview me on thoughts regarding PCI. Through the last couple of years I have been provided with insight and guidance from him pesonally and through this site that he establised to provide information that is not available through normal avenues. I will miss his whit but hopefully his legacy will continue to live through this site and his friends.

I first met Dave when he was speaking at an event I helped to host, and from there our friendship and business collaboration began. He taught me so much and became such a trusted resource. Just a month prior to his passing we had presented our third live webcast together, recorded here on PCI Knowledge Base, so I was shocked and devastated at the news of his passing, as I know everyone was. He will be tremendously, tremendously missed. I find myself missing his advice and counsel already. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I'm Laura Gordon...back in December of 2006 David Taylor found me in search of creating a 'knowledge base' similar to google...after about 6 months of hard work from David of interviewing, and putting into spreadsheets all of the data, we brought the knowledge base to life.

David, always made everyone that he came in contact with feel that they were important, and that they were doing a great job. I was honored to have worked with him, and that I got to know him over the years.

He helped my career as well, by pushing my limits to take the Knowledge Base farther than either him or I thought possible.

Thank you David, and you will be missed..
